Thankful Timing
Mercedes doesn't teach, but she still enjoys building relationships with students at the school. Covering lunch duty one day, she caught a student with a soda, not allowed at lunch. Rather than toss it, she kept it safe in the fridge and returned it at day's end with a stern reminder not to bring another.
That evening, to her surprise, the student sent her a Thx note: "Thank you for always being fair with us students," he wrote. To her delight, he found something to appreciate even during a disciplinary moment.
On her hardest days, Thx notes like that one have a knack of showing up right when she needs it. "I'm so tired," she says of those moments.
"And it's like, ping! A Thx notification appears and I think, okay, something I did mattered to someone. That looks like a God Wink. And I read it, and I can go on."
